What is Phase 0?

Desk research + visual inspection

Foundation Survey Phase 0 is based on the NAFO methodology and consists of two parts: a desk research (file analysis) and a visual inspection on site. No drilling, digging or breaking is involved.

The desk research covers:

Construction year and building history
Soil map and groundwater data
Municipal archives and previous surveys
Data on the foundation construction

The visual inspection (site visit) assesses:

Cracks in facades, walls and floors
Subsidence and skewed door/window frames
Threshold heights and floor levels
Moisture problems and groundwater level
Immediate surroundings and vegetation

Risk classification A, B or C

After the survey you receive a report with a risk classification according to the NAFO methodology. Each classification includes a clear rationale and recommendation.

A

Low risk

No indication of foundation problems. The foundation is in good condition. Regular maintenance is sufficient.

No further action needed
B

Moderate risk

Limited indicators present, such as minor cracks or unfavourable soil conditions. Monitoring recommended.

Monitoring or follow-up survey
C

High risk

Clear indicators of foundation problems. Severe cracks, subsidence or an unfavourable combination of risk factors.
